Art has been an important element in Jewish creativity from the earliest times. The Hebrew Bible itself is a witness. It tells us of the strange creatures called `cherubim` whose outstretched wings sheltered the ark of the covenant from above. The candlebrum in the sanctuary is described with meticulous detail and was clearly an object on which great artistic ingenuity and care were expended. The construction of the tabernacle and its furniture was entrusted to Bezalel ben Uri, a man who was pre-eminent `in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship; able to design skilful work, in gold, silver and brass, to cut precious stones, and to carve wood`.
