Mark Setzer has a lot on his mind. He's worried about his upcoming bar mitzvah, and he misses his best friend, who's moved to the rich side of town and started hanging out with the obnoxious kid they used to make fun of. Mark doesn't need the aggravation of his mother signing on to manage his Little League team. But if "Mother Bagel" complicates Mark's life, she's great for the team. Suddenly, they're winning games and headed toward the championship. The problem is, Mark has some information that could change everything, and he doesn't know what to do with it. He's a friend, a teammate, and the manager's son -- can he be all these and still be true to himself?

Up until October of last year my mother had two hobbies: major league baseball and my brother, Spencer. Spencer was her great year-round activity and baseball was seasonal. Do not get the idea that I was neglected, because I was not. It is just that Spencer is a lot older than I, and Mother had a lot more years to specialize in him.

Opening: A Reappraisal to the Christian Attitude to Judaism
It is now more than thirty years since I plunged unexpectedly into a close study of European academic antisemitism. It would have surprised me greatly at that time to have been told that these studies of contemporary social evil would lead me through history into theology, and into the reppraisal of theological statesments which I had previously seen no reason to question.

Content:
This book deals with the extraordinary pace and extent which characterized the development and sophistication of Yiddish cultural productivity in the period between the middle of the 19th century to post World War 2. The flight of European Jews to America created exciting opportunities for the Yiddish language - books, journals, newspapers and radio stations flourished as both the people and the language become more socially refined. The book also concentrates on one of the nost creative and innovative personalities of the period - Samuel Niger.

Publisher: Gefen, Jerusalem,1996

Additional Details: 122 pages, hardcover with dust jacket, very good condition.

Opening:
In 1881 some eight million Jews lived in Europe, about five million in Czarist Russia, two million in the Austro-Hungarian empire, half a million in Germany, quarter of a million in Rumania, and the rest mainly in Western Europe. The Jews of Russia, Austria and Eastern Prussia were mostly descendent from their forebears who had lived in Poland before the several partitions at the end of the eighteenth century. In all three empires, which were ruled by enlightened despots with absolute power, the Jews were subjected to discriminatory decrees and persecution.

Opening:
Art has been an important element in Jewish creativity from the earliest times. The Hebrew Bible itself is a witness. It tells us of the strange creatures called `cherubim` whose outstretched wings sheltered the ark of the covenant from above. The candlebrum in the sanctuary is described with meticulous detail and was clearly an object on which great artistic ingenuity and care were expended. The construction of the tabernacle and its furniture was entrusted to Bezalel ben Uri, a man who was pre-eminent `in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship; able to design skilful work, in gold, silver and brass, to cut precious stones, and to carve wood`.
Solomon`s Temple in Jerusalem, so lavishly described in the Bible, had a great laver which rested on the backs of twelve oxen. The temple must have been one of the architectural and artistic wonders of the ancient world. Only descriptions are left to convey to us the fruits of early artistic endeavour, since very little has physically survived destruction by enemies and the depredations of the ages.

Opening:
The name Cremieux is not uncommon in southern France. There are several hypotheses to explain its origin, the most plausible being that it derives from the town of Cremieu in the department of Isere, in the province of Dauphine. This town, with its crenelated gates, its great round towers and its castle in ruins, recalling the Middle Ages even in our time, had a Jewish community as early as the fourteenth century.

Content:
The book Faith and Reason: Modern Jewish Thought offers intellectual biographies of six major representatives of modern Jewish thought: Hermann Cohen, Franz Rosenzweig, Martin Buber, A.D. Gordon, Rav Kook, Judah L. Magnes. In analyzing the work of these creative Jewish thinkers, Bergman concentrates on the issue of faith and reason. How does the Jewish thinker resolve the tension between these two forces? How does he deal with the question of whether there is a distinctly Jewish way to God?

Opening:
This book deals with men of faith in our time. However, it wants to do more than tell the story of their lives. Their ideas and experiences may help us discover what faith itself means.
