On the afternoon of Thursday, October 25, 1956, Israel began to mobilize. At a Cabinet meeting on Sunday, October 28, Israel took the decision to launch an operation against Egypt, although the size and scope of that operation were not then determined. At nightfall on Monday, October 29, a battalion of an airborne brigade was dropped in the Mitla area, not far from the Suez Canal, and the rest of that brigade moved across the frontier to reinforce it. One hundred hours later Israel's Army, in response to the British ultimatum, halted just short of Suez.

| Opening: |
For President Lyndon B. Johnson, June 6, 1967, the second day of the Arab-Israeli Six-Day War, was ``the most awesomely difficult day of my life.`` This was the day the Russians first used the Hot Line from Moscow in anger.
While the world was engrossed with the drama of Israel`s lightning victory over its Arab enemies, a more momentous struggle unfolded in secret between the two world superpowers. Over the Hot Line on Tuesday and again on Saturday, President Johnson and Premier Alexei Kosygin waged a war of nerves and of wills. In it, as one Presidential advisor later related, ``the confrontation we had tried to avoid threatened to get out of hand. And we moved very close to precipice.`` So close, that on the final day of the Six Day War, as Israel was crushing the Syrian Army and Kosygin heated-up the Hot Line with threats of intervention, President Johnson ordered the Sixth Fleet to move east in the Mediterranean toward the theatre of war for possible action against the Russians. |

| Opening: |
Lyndon Johnson brought to the presidency a remarkable array of political talents. An activist and an intensely emotional man, Johnson seemed to enjoy exerting his power. As majority leader in the Senate, he had used the art of persuation as few other leaders had; building consensus through delicately constructed compromises had been one of his strong suits. His political skills did not, however, extend to foreign policy making, an area that demanded urgent priority, especially as American involvement in Vietnam grew in late 1964 and early 1965.
Fortunately for the new president, one part of the world that was comparatively quiet in the early 1960s was the Middle East. Long standing disputes still simmered, but in comparison to the turbulent 1950s, the situation seemed manageable. The U.S-Israeli relationship had been strengthened by President Kennedy, and Johnson obviously was prepared to continue on this line. His personal sentiments toward Israel seemed warm and admiring. |

General Dayan is the man who masterminded the invasion into Sinai Peninsula on October 1956 and commanded the Israeli troops in the field. This book brings his own personal account of the Sinai Campaign. The book is based on the diary for the years 1955-7 kept by the office of the Chief of Staff. The entries covered not only the military items but also the political context in which they were set.

| Publisher: | Steimatzky, Israel,1966 |
| Opening: |
THE Sinai Campaign was the product jointly of a sharpening of the politico-security conflict between Israel and her neighbouring Arab States, and of the Anglo-French decision to establish control of the Suez Canal Zone by force.
If it were not for the Anglo-French operation, it is doubtful whether Israel would have launched her campaign; and if she had, its character, both military and political, would have been different.

At the time the United Nations announced the partition plan for Palestine, there were in existence in the Jewish community in Palestine - the Yishuv, or Eretz Israel, as the community referred to itself - three distinct, efficient, and operational military organizations. One of these - the Haganah - was the underground army of the Jewish Agency, and thus was the official armed force of the Zionist Movement.

It was Sunday, June 4, 1967. All the newspapers carried the doleful account describing the terrible predicament in which the diminutive country of Israel had suddenly found herself. A country no larger than the state of Massachusetts with a population of only 23/4 million was being completely encircled by the League of Arab States. These states represented a population of 50 million and they were allied with other Arab States representing 60 million more. A military massacre appeared inevitable.

| Opening: |
The United Nations Organization decided on the partition of Palestine, and the establishment of a Jewish and an Arab state. The Jews in the country were ecstatic. In every house and on every street people gathered to celebrate. We, on the kibbutz, all got together in the dining hall, bottles of wine materialised on the tables, and we all started to sing, dance and toast one another. We were truly swept by joy. Mine, however, was mixed with anxiety. I was a driver. The question was: what will tomorrow bring? We all knew that bloody riots would break out, and that we, the drivers, would be in the front line.

BEER SHEBA, ISRAEL MARCH 18th, 1967
Dear Blanche and Abe,
These damned border raids are beginning to become a nuisance. The one last Thursday at Arad gave me so much work that I had to take a tranquilizer in the evening and I nearly dropped from fatigue. Until recently it was the custom of the army to send accredited military correspondents from Tel-Aviv to every place, recently they changed the system and take the local correspondents from the Negev. Of course this gives us big stories and front page by-lines, but oh boy is that hard work. One raid a week is enough for me. |

| Content: |
This diary is an authentic personal record kept by a foreign correspondent, a resident of Jerusalem, during the siege on the city in 1948. The diary tells the intimate story of the ninety day siege. It shows the effect on the daily lives of the men and women of Jerusalem, of the growingly intense day and night fighting, the rapid detoriation of the living conditions, the complete isolation and the desperate attempts to break the siege.

| Opening: |
25 March, 1948 The stars were going out when Ruth and I left the Tel Aviv hotel. The clock said 5.15. Shooting was sporadic now, after the savage night. Double-barrelled mortar blasts and the spasms of machine-guns diminished and renewd themselves since early evening like the unwinding of an endless chain. From our balcony we watched the red-and-purple tracer bullets knifing their way upwards and flares splashing fiery globes of light into the sky. The sounds of a dance party floated across from a nearby flat. Lorries filled with young Jews rushed through the street below, heading for the Jaffa border, about half a mile away. |

| Content: |
This book was written by seven Israeli newspapermen from three different papers, of conflicting political opinions and different social outlooks. Each of them saw the Yom Kippur War from a different viewpoint and each looked through different eyes. As newspapermen close to security affairs for years, some of them could see the war in aspects hidden from the eyes of many. In this book they attempt to encompass the various aspects, to describe the mishaps and to get to the root of it. Translated from Hebrew.

| Opening: |
My name is Eli, but what does it matter. After all, you're not going to publish my name. I am 26 years old and a student. I hate you journalists who live off corpses and glorify war in grandiose words. I will never forget when I returned from the battle of Rafid Crossroads on the Golan Heights, with 14 wounded, rescued from other tanks of the company. My tank was the only one left. As I reached the casualty clearing station with my torn and bleeding load, a television cameraman and a reporter pounced on us, and began frantically photographing the wounded. I wanted to shoot these creatures, hunting their shocking stories like vultures waiting for their prey.
