Knowledge of architecture in the biblical period has been limited both by the lack of information on architectural details in the ancient records and by the infrequent survival of the buildings themselves as the passage of the centuries the activities of succeeding generations of builders contributed to their eventual destruction. Of those buildings which have been found among the ruined cities of Canaan and early Israel, we are fortunate if one or two layers of masonry remain above the foundation level.

Jerash is one of the three great classical city sites of the Near East. It is, however, altogether different from Petra and Palmyra. The grandeur of Jerash is tempered by a charm to which one can relate immediately. Here the gods of antiquity presided benignly over the everyday life of the people, and still one can feel this human measure. For above all, Jerash is typical of a prosperous provincial Roman town.

| Content: |
When the apartment complex Habitat (Moshe Safdie, architect) appeared fully formed at Montreal's EXPO 67, it was greeted as a victory for humane values within the human jungle, an urbane solution to the housing crisis in the urban centers of the world. Beyond Habitat is a highly personal statement—almost a diary—covering the author's life and career before Habitat, his struggle to transform Habitat from a "design solution" on paper to a living reality, and his general ideas on housing and other matters since its completion. The book is illustrated with halftones of his buildings.
Safdie was born in the city of Haifa in 1938 and moved with his family to Montreal, Canada when he was 15 years old. |

You say the word `house` and it means so many different things to different people. One person sees it on an open road in the countryside; another sees a village. One thinks of a farm; another of a cliff dwelling in the urban landscape. Environment is culture and culture is archetypal; it grows from deep within you, embodies long-lived feelings towards shelter, family, community and self. To me the word `house` calls up images peculiar to my early environment.
It was a unique time when I was growing up in Israel. It was Israel in the making.(Moshe Safdie: Beyond Habitat, page 47) |

This book deals with the architectural history of the Europen Synagogue. It tries to show when and why structural and stylistic forms were adopted, certain changes were made and certain symbols given expression. But beyond the story of a building, I tries to convey something of the life of the Jewish people, its beliefs, its hopes, and its experiences. With 246 photographs and illustrations.
