Opening:
The Peasant's Year in Palestine has two chief divisions, Summer and Winter. "Six months summer and six months winter" (sitte shuhur sef sitte shuhur shita) as they say. We translate the word "shita" (lit: rain) by winter feeling how absurd it is so to call the glorious procession of spring months, but the peasant, of course, in his use of the word is thinking all the while of the rain, and is still hoping for a shower or two even as late as April.

Opening:
`Go Forth to the Land That I Will Show You`
The beginning of the history of the children of Israel as told in the Bible dates back to Abraham, the first Patriarch, who lived in Mesopotamia around the 17th century B.C.E. Heeding the words of the Lord, he took his wife, Sarah, and his nephew, Lot, and departed for a new Land. `When they arrived in the land of Canan, Abraham passed through the land as far as the site of Shechem, at the oak of Moreh.` (Genesis 12:5-6). Why specify that Abraham camped `at the oak of Moreh`? The sentence which follows is the key: `The Canananites were then in the land.`
Abraham came into Canaan with `cattle, silver and gold.` (Genesis 13:2) Had he camped near the existing Caanite settlements, his flocks would have caused great damage to the local crops.

The Wadi was old in the time sense of living things before the first animals came to live there. The wadi is older now, even in the time sense of places, and nothing much has happened to change it. True, the lion and the bear long ago disappeared from the area and the trees are the poorer for the lack of a chattering aquirrel in their branches, yet the animals of Addulam live out their lives much as did their ancestors in long forgotten days.

Opening: The Land of the Bible has the distinction of beeing a place familiar to millions of people who have never visited it and who can never hope to do so. There must be many in distant lands who had heard of Jeruslem and Jericho before they even knew the name of the capital city in the country of their birth, and this all because of one book, that book of books which has had a greater influence on mankind than any other, the Bible.
The Bible was not only written in Israel; it grew out of it. The religious and social philosophy it contains could perhaps have been born elsewhere, but the way in which these thoughts are expressed and the imagery used bear the indelible imprint of her countryside.
What is left to us of the world of the Bible? Where are the hills and the valleys, the plants and the animals which it describes? Does anything still remain of the environment which did so much to lend immediacy to its prophecies, meaning to its laws and imagery to its poetry?
An archaeologist would be amused by such questions. There is hardly a place or a material object mentioned in the Bible which he cannot produce for inspection - and we do not mean a reconstruction, but the real thing. What place would you fancy? Beth Shean or Megiddo perhaps, or Jaffa, whence Jonah embarked for Ninveh, or the well of Harod from which Gideon`s men drunk? Or perhaps you would like a clay pitcher, penates (ancient houshold gods), letters from ancient Lachish or scrolls from Qumran? They are all to be found here. In the dry air of the Judean desert a mat of rushes was recently found in a state of perfect preservation after 6,000 years, and it can be seen today in the Israel Museum in Jeruslem. And what about the oak and the terebinth, the gazelle and the vulture? Are they legendary or can they be seen today, just as they were then, and thus reveal some new insight into the Bible?
